The Piper Tri-Pacer

The Piper Tri-Pacer or more accurately the PA-22 Tri-Pacer was a redesign of Piper's PA-20 Pacer. The PA-20 Pacer uses a tailwheel and forward visibility is limited. It was difficult to handle on the ground. The PA-22 Tri-Pacer used a nosewheel instead of a tailwheel landing gear making it easier to handle. Because of this redesign in the landing gear, the Piper Tri-Pacer looked like a milk stool and thus earned the moniker "Flying Milk Stool".

The PA-22-150 Caribbean is a more affordable version of the Tri-pacer that was available in 1959 and 1960. It is less equipped than the standard Tri-Pacers but it does the job.

There's a few PA-22s that were converted to use a taildagger making them look like a PA-20 Pacer but with the refinements and features of the Tri-Pacer. These conversions are referred to as PA-22/20. However, the FAA classifies such aircraft as PA-22 Tri-Pacers.

The PA-22 108 Colt is the trainer version of the Tri-Pacer. It was intended to compete with the Cessna 150. The Colt was only produced from 1961 to 1964.  It's the same as the PA-22 Tri-Pacer except that it has the rear seats removed and only has one fuel tank in the left wing. There were no flaps and some details of were changed to make the aircraft cost less and to make the aircraft simple enough for beginner pilots.
