Avionics For Sale
Avionics - short for aviation electronics - encompasses electronic systems used in aircraft, spacecraft and
satelites. Communications equipment, navigation and guidance equipment, display systems, indicators and sensors,
flight management systems, weather radars, computers and other electronic devices installed in aircraft and
spacecraft fall under the avionics category.
A single aircraft or spacecraft can use hundreds of avionics systems from a simple search light installed in a
police chopper to an early warning system to detect eneymy missiles in military aircraft.
The History of Avionics
The term avionics wasn't used widely until the early part of 1970. Before that time, aircraft instruments are
all mechanical and didn't use electronics. It was the military that pioneered avionics in the 1970s with its ever
growing need to make a huge number of electronics to work together in a single aircraft. Avionics usually take the
lions share in the budget in aircraft development. Cost of avionics in non-military aircraft also shot up in
cost.
Aircraft Avionics
The cockpit of an aircraft is a major location for avionic equipment, including control, monitoring,
communication, navigation, weather, and anti-collision systems. The majority of aircraft drive their avionics using
14 or 28 volt DC electrical systems; however, large, more sophisticated aircraft (such as airliners or military
combat aircraft) have AC systems operating at 115V 400 Hz, rather than the more common 50 and 60 Hz of European and
North American, respectively, home electrical devices.[1] There are several major vendors of flight avionics,
including Honeywell (which now owns Bendix/King, Baker Electronics, Allied Signal, etc..), Rockwell Collins, Thales
Group, Garmin, Narco, and Avidyne Corporation.
